RME Department
Welcome to the RME Department!
The RME Department is lead by Mr Berry. RME may be done quite differently from your previous school. In Paisley Grammar we like to have lots of discussion. We value our pupils views and always encourage participation. When pupils share their views with each other they learn to listen and respect other's opinions, they learn how to discuss(rather than argue), they see their own confidence build and feel able to defend their own stand point and articulate themselves in academic debate.
We cover a wide range of topic in RME, which include:
World Religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism. We break World Religions into 3 parts: The Human Condition - What is the Human Condition according to a specific religion?, The Goals - What are the goals for adherents of a specific religion? and The Means -How do religious people achieve the goals? How should they behave? How does their religion shape their daily lives?
Morality: First we think about how we make moral decisions? Do we need religion to lead good, moral lives? Or can we make moral choices that are not based in religion? Then we look at some specific moral dilemmas and look at both religious and secular responses. Some of the issues we study are: Stereotyping, Discrimmination, Human Cloning, Medical Ethics, Crime and Punishment
Philosophy: Ultimate questions, for example Does God exist? Is there life after death? Are we free? What do you think we need in order for us to live good lives?
There are many opportunities for you to also gain a qualification in the RME department. We offer the following courses: National 4/5 RMPS, Higher RMPS, Intermediate 2 Philosophy and Higher Philosophy.
